Edric Crestrun

It hadn't been long after the beatdown they had delivered upon the horrid devil that had attempted to ambush them, and the party was abound with questions involving their attackers. Having been educated on these matters, Edric had been asked by several of the members of the party to help answer some of their questions. Naturally, he took the opportunity with gusto to once again prove how smart he was and found himself a nice stump to sit on, as he fished a book out of his bag and coughed, looking among the three women who had gathered. "Ahem. Where do ya want to start?"

Quinys Forgedawn

"What was that thing?" Quin sat crosslegged in the grass, slowly dragging her dagger over a wet stone to sharpen it and wondering if she'd ever get the smell off her rapier. "And why did it smell like that?"

Edric Crestrun

"The hard question first, eh?" He sighed, not paging to a particular part of his book, because it would certainly not include the answer. "That thing was a Baatezu most likely, also colloquially known as a Devil. They're nasty fuckers who work within a tightly regimented hierarchy, like to make deals with humans that usually end up fuckin' em over, and are brutally organized. As to what kind of devil it was…I ain't got a clue, but it was definitely a mid-rankin' one. As for the smell? Some of 'em just really smell bad."

Rowan

"What do you mean hierarchy? That thing has a boss?" Rowan was also sitting on the ground, idly playing with some grass, still feeling guilty and not particularly wanting to make eye contact with anyone.

Edric Crestrun

"Oh yeah, probably got a whole bunch of 'em. If ya wanna talk about the one at the top though, that's gotta be Asmodeus." Flipping through his book, he stopped on a specific chapter. "Used to just be an Archdevil, ruler of the Nine Hells themselves, with plans that spanned millenia and ended up bein' so convoluted it was hard to tell if they were even doin' anything. 'cept it turned out they did, cuz he ate a damn god and now he's apparently the God of Sin according to his mortal worshippers. He's pulled enough shit that it's not too unbelievable. Still, I can't say for certain, it sounded like this thing answered to a celestial of all things, and who fuckin' knows what's goin' on there."

Quinys Forgedawn

"And celestials are?" Quin takes a long drink from her wineskin and tosses it toward Rowan, smiling a bit. She knew what it was like to feel like everything was your fault, and Rowan hadn't held the Adonis debacle against Quin, so it was important for Quin to show she wasn't going to hold this against Rowan.

Edric Crestrun

"Really? Alright…" He pulled a second book from his pack, this time a little less ominous looking. "Celestials are the 'good guys', I guess. They're the opposite of fiends, the ones who occupy all the places you wanna end up when yer dead if you've been a good little boy or girl. If you've ever heard of Angels, that's what you're referrin' to. They ain't all good though, they're just soldiers mostly, and what they know is followin' orders. Some of 'em stopped havin' orders to follow, and so they sorta did their own thing. Honestly, we know even less about 'em than the fiends."

Quinys Forgedawn

Rowan smiles and nods to Quinys, not wanting to interupt Edric while he was on a roll. Her experience with alcohol was quite limited, but she takes a sip anyway before passing it back. Wiping her mouth she looks up at Edric, confused. "So, wait, go back, you're going too fast. What's this about Nine Hells and eating a god?"

Edric Crestrun

Going back to his other book, he coughed and turned back to where he was before. "So, this kinda thing is argued a lot back in the schools of magic, and I've seen people get into fist fights about it, but it's been theorized that at some point, Mystra, god of magic, lost control of her domain, and one of her lesser deities, Azuth, got a little lost down in the Lower Planes. Asmodeus, who's never passed up an opportunity, ate him while he was weakened, and accomplishin' what he's wanted for millenia, ended up becoming a major god in his own right. Some people argue this never happened, and he's still just a super nasty Archdevil, but a lot of the more religious folk swear he's the God of Sin now."

Quinys Forgedawn

"So, no one really knows the truth and we're all just guessing? How do we even know this stuff? Do people actually talk and interact with these things?" Quin slid the skin over the grass toward Edric and goes to sharpening her rapier, maybe if she takes the first layer of metal off it'll help clean the smell a bit.

Edric Crestrun

Grabbing the skin and taking a healthy swig, he let out a contended sigh and tossed it back. "Well, that's the thing, we don't ever know fer sure. Used to be the gods would come on down to Toril and cause all sorts of trouble, and would speak to people directly. Ain't been like that for awhile, but there are ways and means of discoverin' this stuff, various augeries and omens that can be observed, and some people have traveled to these planes and returned, bringin' back information directly. That's some real high up magic though, the kind of stuff I can only still dream of. One day, though…"

Rowan

"So it sounds like demons and angels don't exactly…get along. Why would a demon be working with an angel?" Rowan leans her head against her hand. She has always enjoyed learning, but this was far more complicated than she realized.

Edric Crestrun

He throws his hands in the air. "No fuckin' clue, Rowan. That's about the last question I'd know an answer to, and I doubt there are more than a handful of people on Toril who could actually provide one. It's definitely somethin' I've never heard of, even if not all angels are good, and not all fiends bad, they fuckin' HATE each other on a base level. It ain't opinion, or even instinctive, it's just who they are at their very core of existence."

Quinys Forgedawn

"So, what, they're programmed to hate each other? That doesn't make sense, don't they have control over their own actions or thoughts?" Quin put the wine skin away and leaned back on her hands, tilting her head to one side. "I mean, I know they have bosses, but even bosses can't control your thoughts usually."

Edric Crestrun

"They ain't like us, Quin. Programmed isn't a bad term to use here, they were purpose made, and while Fiends are born from evil human souls, celestials were born out of the intentions of the gods of the Upper Planes for a specific reason." He pulled out his flask and took another long drink before continuing on. "Problem is, we don't know much about 'em, so maybe one of 'em, not having a purpose anymore, decided to invent their own. Maybe it's using them as tools towards a specific purpose themselves, and is able to tolerate their existence long enough to send 'em to their destruction against us."

Rowan

"So…" She hesitates, not sure if she wants an answer "What does it usually take for Fiends and Celestials to get involved with people? It doesn't sound like they deal with us too much anymore, but there was one here now."

Edric Crestrun

"Well, there's some precident, but I ain't really got anything that fits this kind of thing…I was hopin' we could keep some of these questions a little more general, y'know?"

Quinys Forgedawn
"I mean, I don't even know what to think anymore. I thought most of our threats were going to be GO lens and the like, but now there's…demons, celestial, whatever after us? Can we just start wearing garlic or something to ward them off?"

Rowan

"Right, sorry, I just don't even know where to begin, it's all so strange."

Edric Crestrun

"It's fine, Rowan, I can see why that's what you'd wanna focus on. As for your question, Quin…mostly we just deal with 'em the same way we've been dealin' with em, with spell and sword and general violence."

Rowan

"I suppose I don't really know what else to say. It's a lot to take in. Is there anything else we should know if we come across something like this again. I get the feeling this won't be the last one." Rowan tries not to let the guilt show on her face this time, wanting to appear more confident than she is.

Quinys Forgedawn

Quin tried to give Rowan a trusting smile, wanting Rowan to know Quin would be there if she was ever needed. "Like weaknesses or anything, how do we fight one as effectively as possible?"

Edric Crestrun

Shutting his book, he put it away. "Trust the god squad, basically. Except for yer magic rapier, they're the ones who can really put the hurt on these things. Anything powered by their gods is anathema to them. If ya wanna know the best way to deal with them when they show up, put your trust in Onys, Erys, and Valorn. I can back them up with my magic missiles, but they're the ones best equipped." Standing up, he smiled at the two of them, having enjoyed this little question and answer session. "Cmon, we should get back to the others, I'm sure we've spent enough time talkin'."
